ASIS International
Houston Initiates
Chapter Membership Program
By
Michael Crocker, CPP
ASIS Int.
Houston 2002 Vice-Chairperson
and Robert Cascino,
CPP ASIS Int.
Houston 2002 Treasurer
Over the course of the past couple of
years, the Executive Committee has worked to contain chapter costs while
improving services delivered to the membership. Like all organizations, costs do continue to increase, in
spite of containment efforts. Accordingly,
we have considered ways to offset costs and have concluded, on two
separate occasions, the need to adopt an ASIS Houston Chapter Membership
Program. Since all the
proceeds of the ASIS International membership dues are retained at the
International level, local ASIS International Chapters must finance their activities
without support from the International office.
In Houston, Chapter activities have historically been funded by
the retention of seminar fees from the annual Security and Law
Enforcement Management Training Conference, corporate sponsorships and
other donations by businesses and individuals interested in the
Chapter’s activities.
The Chapter has historically underwritten
a number of activities, as they do not generate sufficient revenue to
cover all the incurred costs. The Monthly Chapter Luncheon, which includes Chapter guests,
honored guests and invited speakers whom receive lunch free of charge,
has run a deficit averaging 5% of the total cost for several years.
The Chapter CPP Review requires updated texts and study materials
which are underwritten by the Chapter as a service to those members
interested in professional development. Regular donations to law enforcement officers injured in the
line of duty or assistance to their families has also been funded by
Houston Chapter funds.
As costs have risen, the Houston Chapter
has resisted the temptation to raise activity fees on the 4 Hour Mini
Seminars, the Monthly Chapter Luncheons or the annual Security and Law
Enforcement Management Training Conference because a Chapter priority
has always been to provide the maximum value possible for the minimum
cost to active Houston Chapter members.
In that spirit and with the goal of providing for basic Chapter
activities without diminishing funds available to improving training
opportunities, the Chapter Executive Committee twice concluded an annual
Chapter membership dues of $25.00 was indicated.
The decision reached in April/May 2002 was reevaluated in October
2002 to insure that the decision taken was the best possible course of
action for the Chapter as a whole.
Annual Chapter membership dues will not
prevent any ASIS International member from attending any Houston Chapter sponsored
activity or event. Each
activity or event will offer a Chapter member or nonmember price thus
active members will receive the lowest possible cost and recover their
membership dues relatively quickly.
Chapter nonmembers will only pay for those activities they agree
to support. Of the 567
members coded by ASIS International to the Houston Chapter, only 7%-15%
attend any given activity or event at one time.
When evaluating alternatives to local
Chapter dues, it became clear that every member views chapter activities
differently. It was
concluded that receiving the lowest possible fee structure because their
fees were financing the largest portion of Chapter costs should
encourage the most active members.
Included with this Chapter newsletter is an invoice for Chapter
dues during 2003. Whether
you conclude Chapter membership is right for you or prefer to support
selected Chapter functions, every member of ASIS International is
welcome to enjoy ASIS Int. Houston’s hospitality.
