Activities and Recommendations

Chapter Business and Committee Activities:

Everyone was reminded about the Cross Award Scholarships for CPP Review. It was announced that Brad Robinson will co-chair our Chapter\\\'s Annual Seminar. Randy Simpson announced that our Golf Tournament set a new course record for the most people on the course at any one time. Mike Mason reminded everyone to check the Chapter website for job openings and to send him an e-mail if they wanted the expanded, but do not post, list. The monthly Law Enforcement Officer of the Month Award was presented to Harris County Sheriff\\\'s Office Sergeant Rodney Tooley whose bravery and quick thinking as part of a Gulf Coast Violent Offenders Task Force operation prevented a wanted drug dealer from deploying an assault rifle against him and his fellow officers. The suspect was also wanted for questioning in a double homicide, and informants had described the suspect as a hardcore drug dealer and a ruthless killer. The suspect reportedly had prior military training, and he was known to carry a number of weapons at all times, including several pistols, a shotgun and an assault rifle. Deputies learned the location of a possible residence for the suspect, and they took up strategic positions near that location. The suspect attempted to flee in a vehicle when he U-turned and came back to his residence where he came out of his vehicle carrying the assault rifle. Sgt. Tooley charged him in his police car forcing him back into his vehicle and prevented him from firing the weapon. The suspect came out of the other side of his vehicle armed only with a pistol and was quickly apprehended. Inside of the vehicle was found a loaded SKS assault rifle and a loaded 12 Gauge shotgun.
