Minutes - November 14th Luncheon.

Annual Chapter Educational Seminar Committee:  Reported a highly successful and profitable seminar with excellent attendance (ave. 50 per session.

 

Law Enforcement & Public Safety Liason:  The Officer of the Month was Offic= er Kenneth S. Polka

 

On July 7, 2007, Officer Kenneth Polka spotted a stolen vehicle and attempted to conduct a traffic stop.  When the driver pulled into a near= by parking lot, he got out of the vehicle and stepped aside. Ignoring the offi= cer’s verbal commands, the suspect reached into his waistband and retrieved a handgun.

 

Rather than resorting to the use of deadly force, Offi= cer Polka attempted to deploy his taser.  When one of the darts failed to ma= ke contact, he struggled with the suspect to gain control of the weapon. Again, the officer tried to discharge his taser for a “drive stun” but was struck by the suspect.  Officer Polka was then able to tak= e hold of the suspect’s arm and hand that held the gun.

 

At this time, two Harris County deputies and= one Harris County Detention officer came to the officer’s aid. Together, = they subdued the suspect who was charged with Aggravated Assault on a Police Officer, and Felon in Possession of a Weapon. No one was seriously injured during the arrest of the felony suspect.

Mr. Eddie Russell, the owner of one of Houston's largest established commercial glass tinting companies spoke about the use and effectiveness of glass films for safety and security, and realizing a good return on investments based u= pon the energy savings that could also be recovered = by use of the films.  He stressed considerations such as proper installation, correct film selection, etc.
